Media Replace replaces an image or file and keeps the name and address, so the pages that use it show the new one at once. Pro keeps every earlier version and can replace a file at a set time – and back afterwards.
In WordPress the plugin is called Datoden Media Replace – in the DT-addons menu it is listed as DT-media-replace.
Replace a file and keep the address – Pro keeps earlier versions and swaps files in at a chosen time.
How Media Replace works
DT-media-replace adds Replace file to images and files in the media library. The new file goes in the same folder, with the same name and the same address, so pages, posts, slideshows and menus that use it show the new one at once. Title, alt text, caption and description are left as they are.
Replace file in three places
The Replace file box is on the image's own page (Media → the image), in the media window (Replace file… in the details) and in the list view (Replace file under the name). Choose a new file or drag it there, with a progress bar while it uploads.
Sizes are made again
All sizes are made again from the new image. If the new image has other proportions or is smaller, the old sizes are made again under their old names, so images already placed in pages keep working.
PNG becomes JPG and the other way round
A PNG, WebP or GIF that replaces a JPG is converted to JPG (and the other way round), so the file name can stay the same. Other files must be the same type – a PDF is replaced with a PDF.
Undo the last replacement
The file from before the last replacement is kept in a protected folder and can be brought back with Undo last replacement in the box.
The new file shows at once
Image addresses get a version number (?v=…) after a replacement, so browsers and image services fetch the new file. The page cache is emptied in WP Fastest Cache, WP Rocket, W3 Total Cache, WP Super Cache, LiteSpeed and SiteGround.
Earlier versions Pro
Before every replacement the file in use is kept – the ten latest per file – with date, size and a small preview. The Earlier versions list sits in the Replace file box, and Restore brings a version back. The file being replaced is kept in turn, so nothing is lost.
Schedule a replacement Pro
Under Schedule a replacement you choose the new file now and when it should go in. You can also set when it goes back to the earlier file, for example after a campaign. The replacement happens at the first visit to the website after the chosen time.
Overview of scheduled replacements Pro
On the settings page, the Earlier versions and scheduled replacements card shows how many files have earlier versions and which replacements are scheduled, with a link to each file.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to change anything on my pages after a replacement?
No. The new file gets the same folder, name and address as the old one, so pages, posts and menus that use it show the new file at once.
Can I replace a file with a different type?
Images can be converted: a PNG, WebP or GIF that replaces a JPG becomes a JPG, as long as the server can convert images. Other files must be the same type.
Where is the old file kept?
In wp-content/uploads/dt-replace-media-backup/, which cannot be opened from the web. The free version keeps the file from before the last replacement; Pro keeps the ten latest versions per file.
When exactly does a scheduled replacement happen?
It runs through the WordPress scheduler, at the first visit to the website after the chosen time. A file can have one schedule at a time.
Are the alt text and caption lost?
No. Title, alt text, caption and description stay as they are.
What happens when a licence runs out?
Nothing stops working. A purchase never runs out, and when a subscription ends the plugins keep every function – only the updates from Datoden stop.
What is a major version?
The first number in the version. A purchase includes every update in that major version, for example all 1.x versions. A new major version (2.0) comes about once a year with clearly new features and comes at a discount as an upgrade. A subscription always includes it.
How are websites counted?
Websites connected to your Datoden account with a Pro plugin switched on, in the order they were connected. Disconnect a website in My websites to move the licence to another.
Do I need a licence key?
No. The website is connected to your Datoden account with Website Guard, and Datoden knows which updates your licences include.
Can I go back to the free version?
Yes. Deactivate Pro – the free version keeps running with the same settings. Functions that only exist in Pro stop, but nothing is deleted.
Do I keep the free version?
Yes. Pro is an add-on: the free version stays installed and active as the base and is updated from WordPress.org as usual, and Pro adds the Pro features on top. On WordPress.org the free versions are called Datoden …, for example Datoden Media Replace.
Is VAT included?
Prices exclude VAT. VAT is calculated at checkout from your country. Companies in other EU countries can enter their VAT number.
