Faster pages with page caching

Page Cache

Page Cache stores finished pages so they load instantly, and clears the cache by itself when something changes. Pro preloads the pages in the background and makes the files smaller.

In WordPress the plugin is called Datoden Page Cache – in the DT-addons menu it is listed as DT-cache.

How Page Cache works

DT-cache saves every page as a finished HTML file the first time it is visited. The next visitor gets that file straight away – on Apache and LiteSpeed the server sends it through .htaccess without starting WordPress, and on other servers (for example Nginx) the plugin sends it before the rest of WordPress loads. The cache empties itself when you change something, and logged-in users always see the live website.

Page cache with your choice of lifetime

Under DT-addons → DT-cache you turn on Save the pages and choose how long a page is kept – from 1 hour to 1 week, or Until something changes. Search, 404, password-protected pages, previews and the shop cart and checkout are never saved.

Empties itself when something changes

The cache is emptied automatically when a page, post, menu, widget, the Customizer, the theme or a plugin changes. Other DT plugins also empty it when they change something on the pages.

Never save these pages

In the Never save these pages field you enter one address per line. /page/ means just that page, /page/* everything that starts with it, and *word* every address containing the word.

Cache status and front page check

The card The cache now shows how many pages are saved, how much space they take and when the cache was last emptied. Check the front page tells you whether the page came straight from the server, through the plugin or not from the cache – and if not, why.

Empty from the admin bar

When you are logged in, the admin bar has a DT-cache menu with Empty all cache and, while you are looking at a page, Empty this page. The Empty the cache button is also on the settings page.

Move from WP Fastest Cache

If WP Fastest Cache is on the website, the card Move from WP Fastest Cache appears. One click takes over its settings and excluded pages, turns it off and removes its cache and .htaccess rules.

Preloading and a cache per domain Pro

After the cache is emptied, the front page, pages, posts and categories – whichever you tick – are visited in the background so no visitor has to wait. With DT-language every language domain gets its own cache, and preloading covers every language.

Faster pages Pro

The Faster pages card has switches for Smaller HTML, Smaller CSS, Smaller JavaScript, Compress (gzip), Browser cache and Without the emoji script. With the browser cache, images, fonts, CSS and JavaScript are kept in the visitor's browser for four months. Here you also find Own cache for mobiles, which is only needed if the theme sends different HTML to mobiles.

What it looks like

Everything without a Pro label works for free. What is marked Pro is included in the Pro version.

Frequently asked questions

Do I see the cached page when I am logged in?

No. Logged-in users and commenters always get the live website, so you see your changes right away.

Does it work on Nginx?

Yes. If the server does not read .htaccess, the plugin sends the saved pages itself, almost as fast. Gzip and browser caching in Pro do need .htaccess.

The check says the page did not come from the cache. Why?

The answer gives the reason – for example that the front page redirects, that a plugin sets a cookie or marks the page as not cacheable, or that another cache sent the page.

Can I keep WP Fastest Cache running at the same time?

No. DT-cache waits until WP Fastest Cache is turned off, because two page caches at once can give visitors the wrong pages. Use Move from WP Fastest Cache to switch.

Where are the saved pages stored?

In wp-content/cache/dt-cache/, with a folder per domain and address.

What happens when a licence runs out?

Nothing stops working. A purchase never runs out, and when a subscription ends the plugins keep every function – only the updates from Datoden stop.

What is a major version?

The first number in the version. A purchase includes every update in that major version, for example all 1.x versions. A new major version (2.0) comes about once a year with clearly new features and comes at a discount as an upgrade. A subscription always includes it.

How are websites counted?

Websites connected to your Datoden account with a Pro plugin switched on, in the order they were connected. Disconnect a website in My websites to move the licence to another.

Do I need a licence key?

No. The website is connected to your Datoden account with Website Guard, and Datoden knows which updates your licences include.

Can I go back to the free version?

Yes. Deactivate Pro – the free version keeps running with the same settings. Functions that only exist in Pro stop, but nothing is deleted.

Do I keep the free version?

Yes. Pro is an add-on: the free version stays installed and active as the base and is updated from WordPress.org as usual, and Pro adds the Pro features on top. On WordPress.org the free versions are called Datoden …, for example Datoden Page Cache.

Is VAT included?

Prices exclude VAT. VAT is calculated at checkout from your country. Companies in other EU countries can enter their VAT number.
